The Detroit Auto Show is going down right now and the 2020 Supra is the one of the many showstoppers. The reincarnated 2-seater was unveiled in dramatic fashion last week, and has already sold a Supra 3.0 model at Barrett Jackson over the weekend for 2.1 million.
For the first time in over two decades the 5th generation Supra will rip the road as Toyota’s first whip developed by Gazoo Racing.
The 2020 Supra will be on sale this summer in two grades, the $49k Supra 3.0, the $53k 3.0 Premium and the $55k Supra Launch Edition sold at Barrett Jackson. The whip is a stuntastic reincarnation of the best
attributes of past models with fresh aerodynamic upgrades and new infotainment. Driving enthusiasts can look forward to an exhilarating blend of power, precision and agility thanks to a low center or gravity and near 50:50 weight balance.
Like the fourth-gen Supra and the 2000 GT from 67’, the 2020 Supra boasts a short, 97 inch wheelbase with a rigid chassis. Other attributes were taken directly from the 2014 FT-1 Concept.
Optimization of the FT-1 design onto the efficient high-performance packaging of the Supra is achieved by condensing forms, reducing unnecessary elements and further enhancing its dynamic and powerful character.
The wide-body 2020 Supra boasts a long nose with big grille and large intakes and double bubble roof design with new flair like six-lens LED headlights, LED backup lights and unique rear combination tail lights.
The 2020 Supra will be available with dynamic paint jobs like Phantom Matte Gray, Renaissance Red 2.0 Nitro Yellow, Tungsten Silver, Absolute Zero and Turbulence Gray. Nineteen-inch forged alloy wheels are standard. Rear wheels and tires are wider than the front to enhance grip, and performance Michelin Pilot Super Sport Tires are fitted.
The cabin of the 2020 Supra blends traditional GT flair with modern tech. Race-inspired Alcantara seats keep the driver snug and comfy with integrated head restraints and shoulder bolsters. The Supra 3.0 features heated leather seats and leather steering wheel. Standard Supra comfort tech includes keyless entry, rain sensing wipers, a rear camera, power folding mirrors and dual zone automatic climate control.

A Heads-up-Display is available to project important stats on the windshield. The Supra 3.0 features a 6.5 inch multimedia display, while the Supra 3.0 Premium has an 8.8 inch touchscreen with navigation. A 12-speaker audio system is available on the Supra Premium along with Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging and Supra telematics.
The 2020 Supra’s best feature is its powerful 3.0 liter turbocharged inline six with 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. Torque comes heavy at low engine speeds thanks to a combination of a twin –scroll turbocharger, direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve timing on the intake and camshaft. The 8-speed automatic transmission features paddle shifters for manual mode and Launch Control for powerful acceleration to a top speed of 155 mph.
Toyota’s Gazoo Racing, the international umbrella for their motorsports program, had a special hand in designing the Supra’s suspension system. As its first of many forays into street production whips, Gazoo racing influenced the Supra’s rigid chassis design with its low center of gravity. The Supra features fine-tuned spring and shock absorbers with its new double-joint spring strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. Aluminum control arms in the front and back save weight. Standard Adaptive Variable Suspension instantaneously monitors and adjusts damping force.
Variable assist and variable ratio sport-tuned electric power steering help the Supra achieve superb handling. And 4-piston Brembo brakes with 13.7 in front rotors give it racecar level stopping power. Standard active safety tech includes forward collision warning, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beam, road sign assist and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Additional safety tech available includes adaptive full speed cruise control, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and the innovative rear end collision warning.
