Rolls-Royce Sweptail- a Coupe Couture

Recently Rolls-Royce unveiled the Sweptail, its opulent coup that pays homage to some of the world’s greatest tourers. The bespoke coachbuilt motor vehicle is the realization of one enthusiastic customer who commissioned a two-seat Rolls that honors the swept-tail whips of the 1920s. The one-off Roll-Royce Sweptail is said to personify “the romance of travel” with its yacht-inspired features.

Conception of the Hand-Tailored Sweptail

In 2013, Rolls-Royce was approached by one of its most valued customers with a very particular request. A connoisseur and collector of distinctive one-off items including super-yachts and private aircrafts, this gentleman came to Rolls-Royce to realize his vision of a one-off luxury motor car. As a Rolls-Royce connoisseur he was inspired by many of his favorite cars from the marque’s golden era of the early 20th Century, as well as many classic and modern yachts. The client’s desire was for a coachbuilt two seater coupé featuring a large panoramic glass roof.

Bespoke Design Unparalled

The design of the new Sweptail is truly mesmerizing. It looks like a sultry elongated GT adorned in the finest aluminum trim. The pantheon grille is bigger, milled from solid aluminum bigger and hand polished. The periphery of the front face of ‘Sweptail’ is also framed in brushed aluminum.

The coupe’s roofline accelerates as it fires backwards towards the rear of the motor car, overshooting the boot lid edge and emphasizing its length. The longer side window and wide C-pillar finisher underscore the length and proportions of this sleek grand tourer.

Inspired by a palatial yacht, the Sweptail’s raked stern tapers sharply to the rear. The roof line tapers towards the center line of the car concluding in a ‘bullet-tip’ that houses the center brake light. That combined with the sweeping lower bumper area of the motor car creates a feeling of elegance in motion. The underside of the motor car was designed to deliver the visual of a progressive upward sweep.

The uninterrupted glass roof defines the one-of-the-kind Sweptail allowing the sun to illuminate the coupe’s cabin. The panoramic roof rails are frame by polished aluminum and channeled to a vanishing point at the rearmost of the cabin.

Inside the coachbuilt cabin of the Sweptail drivers are cocooned in minimalist elegance. The 2-seat GT configuration has been enhanced with a dope contrast of Moccasin and Dark Spice leather seats with Macassar Ebony and open-pore Paldao trim. Handcrafted Macassar Ebony veneers adorn the dash.

True to the spirit of the transcontinental Rolls-Royce motor cars of the 20s and 30s, in place of the rear seats is a vast mid-shelf made of fine wood with an illuminated glass lip. A hat shelf is polished and inset with luggage rails.

The minimalist dash, wrapped in Macassar Ebony veneers features discreet controls and a contemporary clock with a hand-made Macassar veneer face and titanium machined hands.

The Passarelle flows behind the passenger from the rear edge of the windscreen and wears the “Sweptail” badge. And behind the coach doors sits a pannier that deploys two bespoke leather attaché cases hand-made from carbon fiber with machined aluminum and titanium clasps and locks.

These attaché cases are twinned with the full set of luggage also developed by Rolls-Royce Bespoke exclusively for ‘Sweptail’. The luggage resides in the trunk of the Sweptail, which features polished aluminum luggage rails and the same fine wood that constructs the interior hat shelf and inset.

The center console of the majestic Sweptail houses a one-off hand-built mechanism that, at the touch of a button, will deploy a bottle of the client’s favorite vintage champagne – the year of his birth – and two crystal champagne flutes.
