Audi teases SUV fans with its Q8 Concept that boasts a hybrid high-performing drivetrain and new luxury interior. This new SUV concept tries a hand at a bunch of new innovations – from a shorter charge time to achieve its 621-mile drive range to a ‘disappearing dash.’ Most of the Q8 Concept’s cool new features could make their way into future Audi SUVs.
With this concept whip Audi attempts to tap into the full-size SUV segments with an ‘elegant alternative’ to the macho SUV. The Q8 Concept has a subtle appearance with a Bombay blue paint job and traditional Audi features. The big new grill looks like a Maserati from afar. Dynamic new flair aids aerodynamics.
The Q8 Concept is 16.5 feet long with a wheelbase 9.7 foot long wheelbase, yet the big body has just four instead of eight. Six double-upright bars form the radiator grille. The outer air inlets sit deep into the fascia like the intakes of an air turbine. And an aluminum blade runs along the bottom bumper.
Flat headlights have individual units with a digital matrix laser technology that’s comprised of over 1 million pixels.
The doors of the Q8 have no frames, and they’re opened via touch sensors. Aluminum trims the door sills, four outer taillight blades and rear diffuser.
The interior has abundant space for a lucky four passengers and 22-feet of cargo space. The driver’s dash has a slick disappearing effect. The interior black panel also has cool ambient lighting.
A combination of Nubuck and Nappa leather creates supple seating in the Q8 Concept. Three-dimensional grain comprises the instrument panel, doors and floor. High-gloss trim and aluminum strips are dope accents.
With less buttons to control the SUV’s comfort features, infotainment and commands are adjusted with the Q8’s virtual cockpit. And the heads-up-display now projects speed, navigation and notifications on the windshield.
The Audi virtual cockpit is more dynamic in the Q8 Concept thanks to new functions and a 12.3 inch TFT display with 3D navigation.
The Q8 plug-in hybrid combines a sporty performance with high efficiency. The 3.0 liter TFSI gas engine has 333 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor generates 100 kW and 243 lb-ft of torque. The Q8’s total power output reaches a whopping 446 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Together with a decoupler, it’s integrated into the 8-speed tip tronic automatic transmission.
The Q8 Concept has a top speed of 154 mph and sprints to 62 mph in just 5.4 seconds.
The rear-based lithium-ion battery enables a 37.3 mile electric range. The total range tops 621 miles. A full charges takes just 2.5 hours with a 7.2 kW unit. And the Q8 Concept features quattro permanent all-wheel drive for controlled cornering.
Adaptive air suspension sport with controlled damping can be raised up to 3.5 inches, and allows for optimized driving dynamics from cushioned cruising to firm and tight handling when the conditions require.
