First Look: Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4Matic Coupe

Late last year Mercedes-AMG drops an all-new high-performance SUV coupe, the GLC 43 4Matic coupe with mouthwatering specs. Most impressive is its immaculate V6 biturbo engine, dynamic driving technology and striking new design.

The 2-door 5-seater GLC 43 4Matic is the premium SUV for the part-time adventure seeker and everyday city warrior. The stuntastic low slung deeply raked SUV is more stylish than a BMW X5 with a glossy chrome blacked out grille and big 19-inch alloy wheels. Plus, with adaptable suspension, the rear biased GLC 43 4Matic Coupe can adjust to off-road situations- nothing dangerously steep, but great for beach, forest, and snow.

I dig the sports coupe morphed into a mid-sized SUV. The whip is short and stout but with a planted stance. The diamond radiator grille has chrome pins and high gloss AMG badging. Silver chrome also decks out the front air intakes and rear tail pipes. And the AMG GLC 43 features AMG’s chrome rear apron, narrow divided tail lights and sharp spoiler.

For no reason at all, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 4Matic Coupe drivetrain takes a dump on other SUVs in its class. A refined 3.0 liter biturbo engine boosts 367 horsepower, 520 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm and a top speed of 250 kmh.

The efficient biturbo V6 is matched to a 9-speed automatic transmission with double clutch. The trans can also skip gears with even quicker shifts in Sport, Sport Plus and Manual mode with paddle shifters.

The GLC 43 also has a very impressive Air Body Control suspension system with boosted agility and dynamics. The three-chamber air suspension system with a sporty spring/damper set-up and continuously variable damping adjustment combines excellent dynamics with high comfort. And in sudden load shift, fast cornering, or hard braking, the spring rate auto adjusts to stabilize the GLC 43.

The adaptive damping adjustment offers a Comfort, Sport, and Sport + modes. Dope is the adjustable ride height that allows the GLC Coupe to travel in mild off-road situations. And the little coupe has a 2,460 kg tow capacity. 4Matic AWD has a 31:69 torque distribution. And dynamic select has the familiar AMG drive modes; Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual that adjust engine transmission, suspension and steering. The GLC 43 also features speed sensitive sport steering with optional personalization in Individual mode and ventilated 36 mm 4-piston disc brakes in the front and 24 mm 1-piston rear disc brakes.

The 2017 GLC 43 4Matic coupe has new standard safety tech like Active Brake Assist, crosswind assist, headlamp assist, Attention Assist and Curve Dynamic Assist, and also offers more available dynamic technology.

The cockpit of the fresh GLC 43 4Matic coupe features black Artico hand-crafted leather upholstery with read contrast stitching and red design seat belts. The driver’s dash has a 5.5 inch digital multi info screen that has a Race Timer. The coupe’s back seat will fold flat in 40:20:40 dimensions, and offers up to 1400 liters of cargo space.

An Audio 20 CD sound system features a 7-inch display with Bluetooth and available Garmin Map Pilot with Live Traffic. Available Command technology has an 8.4-inch high-res touchscreen and WLAN hotspot. An optional 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system has a Linguatronic voice command. Command also offers accident recovery, breakdown assist, emergency call and services after sales. Mercedes Me, another cool app available in the GLC 43, allows the owner to unlock/lock, heat and gather vehicle stats remotely.
